3ds Max

3ds Max is Autodesk software for 3D modelling, animation and rendering. It is used to build scenes, organise materials, place cameras and prepare still images or animated sequences.

Use in architectural visualisation

For property work, 3ds Max can turn geometry from drawings, CAD models or BIM exports into a production scene. Artists refine meshes, add surroundings, frame cameras and prepare lighting before rendering.

Geometry alone does not determine the final image. Materials, planting, furniture, context, lighting and camera intent need clear references. Clean naming and approved visual references reduce ambiguity.

Scope and limits

3ds Max is a production tool rather than proof that an image matches the future building. Dimensions, products and finishes still need checking against contractual documents. The chosen renderer, plug-ins and computing resources also affect the workflow.

Practical questions

Which files should be supplied?

Dimensioned drawings or a clean model, plus references for finishes, furniture, landscape and required viewpoints.

Does 3ds Max replace Revit?

No. Revit primarily supports an information-rich BIM model; 3ds Max is commonly used for scene building, animation and rendering.
