BIM modelling
BIM modelling creates and manages a structured digital representation of a built asset, combining geometry with information useful across its life cycle.
Data and coordination
A BIM model can contain objects, properties, classifications and spatial relationships. Its information level depends on intended uses such as coordination, quantities, documentation, operation or input to visualisation.
The BIM execution plan defines responsibilities, formats, coordinates, levels of detail, checks and exchanges. IFC, an open standard published by buildingSMART and standardised by ISO, supports exchange between applications but does not remove the need to test every export.
BIM and 3D imagery
A BIM model is not automatically a rendering scene. Excessive detail, technical materials, temporary objects and sensitive data may need filtering and optimisation. Conversely, an attractive render does not prove the information quality of its source model.
Practical questions
Is an IFC file enough?
It is an exchange basis, but the version, views and expected properties should be stated, followed by checks after export and import.
Why simplify the model?
Visualisation does not need every fabrication detail; removing invisible data often improves handling without changing the source design.
