3D rendering

A 3D perspective is an image calculated from a virtual camera to represent an architectural project before or after construction.

Also known as
CGI image

Preparation

Plans, sections, a model, finishes, context and mood references support scene building. The camera is chosen for the message: urban setting, façade, interior or use.

Progressive approval of geometry, camera and then materials helps identify departures from the design before final production.

Interpretation

A render expresses an intention at a given date. Field of view, light, season and people affect perception; dimensions and specifications must be checked in project documents.

Practical questions

How many views are needed?

One view for each decisive message is a rational starting point; redundant angles add little.

What is photorealistic rendering?

An image designed with plausible visual cues, while remaining neither a photograph nor contractual proof.
